چکیده

We trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) to map raw pixels from a single front-facing camera directly to steering commands. This end-to-end approach proved surprisingly powerful. With minimum training data from humans the system learns to drive in traffic on local roads with or without lane markings and on highways. It also operates in areas with unclear visual guidance such as in parking lots and on unpaved roads. The system automatically learns internal representations of the necessary processing steps such as detecting useful road features with only the human steering angle as the training signal. We never explicitly trained it to detect, for example, the outline of roads. Compared to explicit decomposition of the problem, such as lane marking detection, path planning, and control, our end-to-end system optimizes all processing steps simultaneously. We argue that this will eventually lead to better performance and smaller systems. Better performance will result because the internal components self-optimize to maximize overall system performance, instead of optimizing human-selected intermediate criteria, e. g., lane detection. Such criteria understandably are selected for ease of human interpretation which doesn’t automatically guarantee maximum system performance. Smaller networks are possible because the system learns to solve the problem with the minimal number of processing steps. We used an NVIDIA DevBox and Torch 7 for training and an NVIDIA DRIVETM PX self-driving car computer also running Torch 7 for determining where to drive. The system operates at 30 frames per second (FPS). 1 ar X iv :1 60 4. 07 31 6v 1 [ cs .C V ] 2 5 A pr 2 01 6

Brain Inspired Cognitive Model with Attention for Self-Driving Cars

Perception-driven approach and end-to-end system are two major vision-based frameworks for self-driving cars. However, it is difficult to introduce attention and historical information of autonomous driving process, which are the essential factors for achieving human-like driving into these two methods. In this paper, we propose a novel model for self-driving cars named brain-inspired cognitive...

Tactical Decision Making for Lane Changing with Deep Reinforcement Learning

In this paper we consider the problem of autonomous lane changing for self driving cars in a multi-lane, multi-agent setting. We present a framework that demonstrates a more structured and data efficient alternative to end-to-end complete policy learning on problems where the high-level policy is hard to formulate using traditional optimization or rule based methods but well designed low-level ...

End-to-end Multi-Modal Multi-Task Vehicle Control for Self-Driving Cars with Visual Perception

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have been successfully applied to autonomous driving tasks, many in an endto-end manner. Previous end-to-end steering control methods take an image or an image sequence as the input and directly predict the steering angle with CNN. Although single task learning on steering angles has reported good performances, the steering angle alone is not sufficient for v...

Disruption of Individual Mobility Ahead? A Longitudinal Study of Risk and Benefit Perceptions of Self-Driving Cars on Twitter

In this paper, we address the question if there is a disruption of individual mobility by self-driving cars ahead. In order to answer this question, we take the user perspective and conduct a longitudinal study of social media data about self-driving cars from Twitter. The study analyzes 601,778 tweets from March 2015 to July 2016. We use supervised machine learning classification to extract re...

Machine learning, social learning and the governance of self-driving cars.

Self-driving cars, a quintessentially 'smart' technology, are not born smart. The algorithms that control their movements are learning as the technology emerges. Self-driving cars represent a high-stakes test of the powers of machine learning, as well as a test case for social learning in technology governance. Society is learning about the technology while the technology learns about society. ...

Multi-Modal Multi-Task Deep Learning for Autonomous Driving

Several deep learning approaches have been applied to the autonomous driving task, many employing end-toend deep neural networks. Autonomous driving is complex, utilizing multiple behavioral modalities ranging from lane changing to turning and stopping. However, most existing approaches do not factor in the different behavioral modalities of the driving task into the training strategy. This pap...
